Dr. Clayton's primary area of teaching and research is Latin America, with emphasis on the Andean Region, principally Peru, and the early Colonial Period. He has held two Fulbright Awards, one in 1983 to Costa Rica and one in 1988 to Peru... He was awarded a Pew Evangelical Scholars Program grant, 1999-2000, for a biography on Bartolomé de las Casas, a contemporary of Hernando de Soto.
