His Narration
Cabeza de Vaca spent most of 1528 searching for food and riches in Florida. Along with the Narvaez Army, he trudged from Englewood thru Port Charlotte, Arcadia, Dade City, Perry and St. Marks to Panama City, hoping to spot his ships. Failing that, he coasted westward with 240 survivors in crude boats headed for Mexico; along the Gulf of Mexico's Northern Coast. He coasted Fort Walton Beach and Pensacola, crossed the mouth of Mobile Bay, Alabama, and entered Pascagoula, Mississippi, where natives attacked in the night.
